East 42nd Street Salon is Deva certified. That means we have hair stylists who have been trained to cut and care for curly hair. Most of our curly haired clients come to East 42nd Street Salon after spending years of looking for someone who truly understands curly hair. Common frustrations we hear range from fighting frizz to not knowing what to do with their hair—many end up hiding their curls. Curly girls want to let their natural curl come out and spend less time styling their hair each day. The Devachan technique for cutting curly hair focuses on cutting the hair dry, in its natural form, curl by curl. This allows the stylist to sculpt the hair according to the client’s individual curl and style. Not everyone with curly hair wants or should have their hair cut dry. For those who want flexibility with their hair style—curls one day, smooth locks the next—cutting your hair wet is likely the best technique. Either way, our stylists will help you find the perfect cut and style. The right product is as important as the cut for curly hair. Deva products have proven to work for our clients. Cleansing curly hair requires no shampoo; instead conditioner is used to cleanse the scalp and moisturize the hair. When hair feels limp and heavy from conditioner, a mild cleanser is used. Drying hair naturally or with a diffuser is essential. We also color curly hair using a method called Pintura (Pintura is Portuguese for painting), Deva’s patented hair painting technique especially for curly hair. Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT) is our newest treatment. It was conceived in Brazil and developed in the United States. It is formaldehyde free and reduces the curl in very curly or kinky hair. The treatment is gentle on hair and will smooth (not straighten) curl. It works well on color treated hair and leaves the hair soft, shiny and frizz free for up to four months.
